Purpose of copyright licensing
Commercialisation, distribution and other licensing activities (especially in the public sector) may be conducted for any one or more of several objectives. When creating copyright licences it is essential to clearly articulate the particular objectives. For example, is it the intention to:
- make money?
- defray costs?
- improve the product/material through feedback to the licensor?
- recognise the contribution of staff?
- raise the profile of a Department, Minister, or the Commonwealth?
- promote a standard?
- benefit a particular target group?
- assist Australian industry by allowing access to public sector intellectual property?
- disseminate information which is otherwise in the public interest?
- promote a related product or service?
